Salary: $52,000 - $62,400 annual salary

Full Job Description

The Steep Creek is advertising for the Fire and Land Management Program Leader position. This position will oversee 4-8 team members in prescribed fire and land management  operations. Work will be focused on the ecological management and restoration of land throughout the southeastern United States, primarily in Arkansas. Primary operations will be related to prescribed fire, however wildland fire suppression opportunities may be available. Other tasks may include, post-burn monitoring, fireline establishment, wildlife management, equipment maintenance, and general project work tasks as assigned. This position will require work to be performed in remote locations, with difficult and hazardous terrain, under physically demanding conditions.

 

This position plans, coordinates, and supervises resources needed to safely and efficiently complete objectives. The Fire and Land Management Program Leader will report directly to the Fire and Land Management Division Leader. As a core member of the Steep Creek Team, the successful candidate will be professional, polite, friendly, reliable, attentive and accurate. The successful candidate will always be prepared, organized, responsive, willing to take on challenges directly, and seek assistance when needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and participate in prescribed fire operations, land management and natural resource related projects

  • Lead prescribed fire and wildland fire operations, which may include burn unit prep, fire operations, managing team members, maintenance of equipment and supplies, mop up, and monitoring

  • Oversee and perform other job essential duties, which may include operating equipment, installing fences and gates, property boundary maintenance, and invasive species removal

  • Track of project progress and finances

  • Ensure work is executed according to contract terms and conditions

  • Ensure compliance with safety, health and quality standards

  • Maintain records of resources assigned to a project;

  • Resolve issues promptly and adequately

  • Supervise and participate in prescribed fire operations, including use of heavy and light equipment, hand tools, trucks and other items as needed.

  • Ensure a safe and clean worksite by following established safety procedures.

 

Requirements

  • High School diploma and 3+ year of industry experience or adequate combination of experience and education;

  • Must achieve wildland fire physical fitness standards

  • Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.: chainsaw, ATV, tractor and implements, leaf blower, radio, hand tools, drip torch, etc.)

  • Experience supervising other team members

  • May be required to obtain related licenses and certifications such as CPR and herbicide application.

  • Ability to complete tasks within time frames.

  • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.

  • Ability to navigate to remote sites with maps, written directions, and GPS.

  • Possess clear and concise verbal and written communication skills

  • Possess strong leadership and problem solving skills

  • Ability to understand and follow complex directions including plan details

  • Possess a commitment to team member and public safety

  • Ability to interact with the public in a respectful and professional manner

  • Successfully pass a pre-employment background check and drug test

  • Be available to work overtime including weekends

  • Be available to travel
